This fortified medieval architectural complex, unique in Europe, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, is amazingly well preserved. Nestled within a double line of city walls, overlooked by the earls’ castle and the Saint-Nazaire basilica, the walled city of Carcassonne, crossed with narrow paved streets, offers an exceptional backdrop.

 

Basilique Saint-Sernin

This basilica of brick and stone from the 11th century is actually one of the largest Roman edifices in the Occident! A stop-off along the Way of St James, it is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Beneath its octagonal bell tower you will discover an immense vaulted nave, as well as a crypt that is the resting place for many religious relics. Among them are those of Saint Sernin, a bishop and martyr from the 3rd century.
